The centre-back’s composed presence at the heart of the defence helped steer the champions to three priceless points in a tight, emotionally charged encounter.

Gor Mahia’s new recruit Mike Kibwage savoured a special afternoon at Kasarani as K’Ogalo eked out a 1–0 win over his former employers Tusker FC, in the 100th league meeting between Kenya’s most storied rivals.

The centre-back’s composed presence at the heart of the defence helped steer the champions to three priceless points in a tight, emotionally charged encounter.

The match was a cagey, high-stakes affair from the first whistle, with an early own goal ultimately proving the difference in a game that rarely opened up.

Defences dominated the narrative and chances were at a premium, but Gor Mahia’s resilience and organisation ensured they left Kasarani with the slender advantage that mattered most.

Kibwage, who swapped Tusker for Gor Mahia ahead of the season, spoke with humility and pride after the final whistle.

He acknowledged the challenge of facing his former teammates and praised Tusker’s quality, calling the contest “difficult” and crediting the opposition as worthy rivals. Despite the emotional backdrop, he said he stayed focused and delivered the performance the club needed.

“The game was difficult as you saw. The opponents were good. They are a big team and worthy opponents, and incidentally, my former club,” Kibwage told the club’s media team.

He added that the victory was the product of hard work and collective grit, and that the squad’s attention now turns to their next assignment against APS Bomet.

Kibwage also paid tribute to the growing army of Gor Mahia supporters returning to the stands. He stressed that consistent performances and results are the best way to repay their loyalty, noting the boost the fans provide as the team chases another league crown.

“We appreciate the fans who are coming back in larger and larger numbers. The good thing is that we are winning. That is how we can appreciate them,” he said.

As Gor Mahia press to extend their lead atop the FKF Premier League, Kibwage’s leadership and steadying influence at centre-back have become vital. In a season where margins are fine and every point counts, his composed displays against a familiar foe underline why the champions invested in his experience and character.
